Set the dial to AC and whatever voltage level is above 110v (probably 200). Go get yourself a super-cheap multimeter (from Lowes, Walmart, whatever, like $8). That's the electricity supply, and is powered all the time (unless you flip the breaker in your breaker panel, of course). The black (coming from the ceiling), while I don't see it in your picture, it almost certainly 'hot'. You want to twist the white wire from the fan into that bundle. That's the 'return path' for the electricity after it powers the fan (more or less). OK, the bundle of whites/yellows twisted together in the ceiling is neutral for sure. Need to match yellow, black, and red wires from ceiling to green, white, black, and blue wires from new ceiling fan/light. TL DR: Replacing ceiling light with ceiling light/fan. My wife is home and should be able to get some additional pics if needed. Let me know if you guys need any further info or clarification. I took the pictures right before I walked out the door to head to work so I was in a hurry. You can't really see the black wire in the picture, but I have another one that KIND OF shows the wire. Now, it would have been smart if we had thought to look at how the light was hooked up to the ceiling wires to see what had been matched.but we didn't. Our new fan has a green one on the bracket, a green one on the fan itself, (fairly certain these are the grounds as they are only attached to metal) and the actual fan motor has a Blue, Black, and White wire coming from it. There was a red one, a thick black one, (maybe two twisted together?) and 3 yellow ones. Once we finally got the (new) light fixture off, we were met with a few different colored wires. The box is already attached to a support and is sturdy. Now my wife and I are attempting to install a ceiling fan in our bedroom. Even the inspector said something similar aside from a couple things that hadn't been touched by the remodel. Our experience thus-far has been that the things that were replaced or re-done have all been done very well. Pretty much all the stuff that everyone wants. The house was originally built in the 50's and the most recent owner was a Realtor who bought the house, had it remodeled with granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, etc. My wife and I just moved into a newly remodeled house.
